Transformations

Many entry-level cymbals are made the way they are, not entirely because of limitations of the metal, but due to the amount of labor put in by a skilled craftsman. They're made to meet a price point, and there's nothing wrong with that. I, on the other hand, am fascinated by picking up these limited instruments on the second-hand market and seeing how much I can get out of the metal by completely reworking them into vastly different cymbals. This includes making a complex jazz ride out of a ride that just goes "ding!", making a complex and well-balanced crash out of a 16" cymbal that just goes "bonk", and making darker, breathier hi hats out of extremely bright, basic hats.
